Garth Crooks names ‘perfect replacement’ for Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson

Garth Crooks believes James Ward-Prowse is the ‘excellent substitute’ for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

The Southampton midfielder scored twice on Sunday as his side got here from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Brighton.

Ward-Prowse has usually been praised as the most effective players out of the top six however former Tottenham striker Crooks feels a transfer to Liverpool to someday replace Henderson could be on the cards.

‘When you’re 2-0 down away from home at half-time you had better have somebody particular in your group able to turning the deficit round otherwise the game may as well be over,’ Crooks informed BBC Sport after selecting him in his crew of the week.

‘Luckily, Southampton have James Ward-Prowse, who appears to have the flexibility to dig the Saints out of almost any gap.

‘His two goals in opposition to Brighton were timely as they have been superbly struck. Southampton will do well to carry on to this player.

‘He’s got a lot more to offer and would make the right substitute for Jordan Henderson at Liverpool.’

His brace in opposition to the Seagulls, including a textbook free-kick, saw him transfer to 9 goals for the Premier League season, a personal best.

The 27-year-old narrowly missed out on a spot at last 12 months European Championships last summer season but Micah Richards and Jermaine Jenas consider he’s doing enough to head to Qatar for this 12 months World Cup.

‘In terms of England, he’s a useless certainty for me to go to the World Cup,’ Richards mentioned.

‘He has to go as a result of he’s clever on the ball, he takes free-kicks, he’s reliable. A captain – he leads his team.

‘Southampton at the beginning of the season lots of people expected them to go down, and he’s marshalled them all over the season. 9 goals is simply remarkable.’

Jenas, added: ‘He’s obviously used just missing out on the European championship squad as fuel for him this season and I believe that’s precisely why he has gone into this season with the shape he has gone into it.’
